Making a welcome return to JPO’s podium, Daniel Boico conducts masterworks by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. The evening opens

on a celebratory note. Mozart’s Overture to The Impresario is a spirited and brilliant work composed for a musical competition hosted by Emperor Joseph II in 1786. It serves as a festive prelude to a comic singspiel that parodies the vanity of singers and the rivalries within opera companies. The overture captures the gaiety and artistic height of the period, showcasing Mozart’s prowess with its strong orchestral writing, though, as here this evening, its brevity often makes it a concert favourite distinct from the singspiel itself.

Russian pianist Albert Mamriev, winner of many international piano competitions, is set to wow his JPO audience as soloist in Beethoven’s imposing c minor Piano Concerto. Beethoven introduced his Concerto at an all-Beethoven benefit – with Beethoven as beneficiary – on April 5, 1803, in the Theatre an der Wien, the programme offering three premières: the present work, the Second Symphony, and the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives. The Concerto is a transitional work moving from Classical to Romantic styles, featuring a dark and dramatic first movement, an exquisite, lyrical slow movement in E Major, and a fiery, witty finale in C Major that concludes with triumphant energy.

Maestro Boico rounds off the evening with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 – a symphonic masterpiece often compared to Beethoven’s, taking over 20 years to complete and showcasing a journey from grim tragedy to triumphant C Major. The symphony’s ominous, timpani-driven introduction, the lyrical second movement, the graceful third, and the epic, Beethoven-like finale with its soaring horn melody all contribute to its legendary status and emotional depth. It’s safe to predict a spirit of well-being will pervade the Linder Auditorium as the lovely work sends the audience home, emotionally replete.
